Parra & Romero is pleased to present Coherence Diagrams, the first solo exhibition by artist Ana Montiel (1981, Logroño) at our gallery in Madrid.

Coherence Diagrams is part of Topologies of Existence (TOE), an umbrella project whose acronym deliberately alludes to the Theory of Everything—the elusive master key that physics continues to seek without having found, and around whose possibility all branches of the project orbit. This particular exhibition begins with a question that is simple in its formulation yet profound in its implications: can an inner transformation produce a real change in the reality we inhabit?

Contemporary neuroscience demonstrates that sustained, focused attention produces measurable changes in neural architecture: new synaptic connections, alterations in biomarkers associated with neuroplasticity, and reconfigurations of the brain networks that construct perception. The inner does not merely reflect—it generates. Building on this knowledge, and in dialogue with hypotheses emerging from quantum biology and studies of consciousness, the project explores the possibility that inner transformation can alter the way we perceive and inhabit reality.

The artist draws on a wide range of references, including quantum biology, Jungian psychology, Taoist philosophy, the alchemical tradition, and Stoic thought. These disciplines converge around the same intuition: that the observer and the observed are inseparable, and that transforming the way we look transforms the world that this gaze constructs. Coherence Diagrams does not offer definitive answers to these phenomena; rather, it invites viewers to inhabit them as active questions, to recognize perception as a practice, and to consider that every transformation may begin with a deliberate shift in attention.

The exhibition brings together a new series of paintings and an audiovisual work, El yo en despliegue (notas para una realidad en continua evolución), both centered on processes of transformation. Organized as panoramic compositions traversed by ruptures, displacements, and evolutions, the paintings mark moments of transition between one configuration of the self and another, between one reading of reality and the next. Here, painting functions as a field of inquiry in which forms, rhythms, and compositional variations do not illustrate concepts but embody them, making visible a process of change rather than a fixed reality. Each image appears as an open, provisional diagram—a map of an ongoing transformation—inviting the viewer to navigate it without a single reading or a closed meaning.

Ana Montiel lives and works in Mexico City. Her practice explores the relationship between consciousness, perception, and processes of inner transformation. Her work has been presented in international museums and galleries including Museum Haus Konstruktiv, Zurich (2024–25); Fundación Medianoche0, Granada (2024–25); Lago/Algo, Mexico City (2024); Casa Pentra, Los Angeles (2024); OMR Gallery, Mexico City (2022); Nest, The Hague, the Netherlands (2022); UCCA Dune Museum, Beidaihe, China (2020); Aparador Cuchilla, Mexico City (2020); Peana Off-Site, Gardiner, NY (2019); and Sala Amós Salvador, Logroño (2018). She has also participated in art fairs including Art Basel (Basel and Miami Beach), Frieze London, The Armory Show (New York), and NADA Miami, among others.
